Sacred Grounds

The science supporting climate change is just about as conclusive as science can get. Look at any climate advocacy website and you can find all the numbers, statistics, and models you could ever need to convince you that climate change is happening. Because there is so much overlap between the scientific community and the climate change activism community, and because there is so much evidence, “Just look at the data” has been the central message of the movement to stop climate change.

A Political World

Go ahead and picture your stereotypical government bureaucrat. Got it? Okay, well that
guy’s not at all like Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Director Richard Opper. That much became clear as soon as he pulled up on his scooter to the Helena Public Library to meet with us, sporting a purple shirt and purple tie. But it was straight down to business: he wanted to tell stories.

Bicycle Benefits

I woke up this morning to find our host Jeanne had prepared us a pancake breakfast, making her my favorite person of all time right then and there. Pancakes, sausages, and eggs all in portions as generous as last night’s dinner (i.e. very). Jeanne is yet another amazing and generous person we’ve met on this trip.

Graze Like A Buffalo

Today we got up and got out of Dodge…err Billings. After a few minor delays (a Target run and our daily allotment of flat tires) we rolled onto the highway and out of the city. Though I initially knew nothing of Billings but an oil refinery and the KOA, spending a day cycling through the city with Ed, one of its most devoted residents, showed me a much more complete community. Still, after three nights in town I was ready to get moving. Our next destination was a cattle ranch, and I wanted to get in some miles and see this other side of Montana.

Advice from a paleontologist

We woke in Choteau to the warmth of another generous host's house, which was especially pleasant after the bad-weather riding we all endured yesterday. Although, I think we might have slept a little too well because it seemed particularly difficult to get out of our sleeping bags this morning. We eventually managed to wake ourselves up, and had a very in depth discussion with our host, Eric Bergman, about ecosystems and how they are being impacted by climate change.

Day 1: King coal, liquid gold...information overload?

I signed up for this course not quite knowing what to expect, and I still don't have it all figured out. But as our first real day of class is concluded, I think I speak for all of us when I say I'm excited to find what these next few weeks have in store for us.
