Thoughts from Lake McDonald

Today we had a layover in West Glacier, one of the most beautiful places we could have a free day. This was a perfect opportunity at the end of our trip to be able to reflect on the things we have done and learned and the people we have met. I biked down to Lake McDonald to work on my citizen letter and essay. It was hard for me to focus with all of the beautiful scenery surrounding me.

Good People

Upon waking up in what seemed like a random shop in Dupuyer this morning, I was reminded of the great people that we met last night. I have been so inspired and amazed at the extreme and unexpected generosity that we have encountered while on this trip. The sun was shining this morning and I was so thankful that we were able to stay out of the storm for the night to wake up to a beautiful day. Maybe the education that we are receiving on this trip will help us weather the storm that we, as a civilization, are about to face.

A Mighty Thirst

Sometimes you instinctively know when you are going to have a good day. Today I realized that when I woke up to Dave yelling that it was time to get up to get coffee and donuts. It just so happens that these are two of my favorite things. The only problem this morning was that I woke up feeling extremely thirsty. I must not have drank enough water yesterday during our ride. The day was to show us that water is an extremely valuable resource that we can use in many different ways.

All in a days work

Today, the Charters put us to work. After a hearty breakfast we split into two groups. One went to build a fence, and the other did some gardening work. I was in the second group. Ressa Charter showed us where he was making a raised, double-dug bed. After digging for a few hours in the hot sun, the garden was finally finished. This garden will provide the Charter family with great produce for the year. The fencers drove out to the neighbors land and helped to build a fence to keep the cattle from moving onto their land.
