Thoughts from Lake McDonald

Today we had a layover in West Glacier, one of the most beautiful places we could have a free day. This was a perfect opportunity at the end of our trip to be able to reflect on the things we have done and learned and the people we have met. I biked down to Lake McDonald to work on my citizen letter and essay. It was hard for me to focus with all of the beautiful scenery surrounding me. Peter pointed out a group of adults who were going out on their motor boat for a day on the lake, and we started to wonder what that group of people would say if we were to tell them that they can't do that anymore or there will be devastating consequences on our environment. We both decided that they probably wouldn't like that at all and would think we were crazy for even suggesting it.

You would think that maybe I would chose to do something other than bike riding on our layover day, but that is exactly what I wanted to do today. I wanted to hop on my bike and explore Glacier, so that is exactly what I did. I ended up finding the Old Bridge Road, which a former Cycle the Rockies student told me would be a nice place to sit and relax or write for a while. While sitting on the rocks at the side of the river I watched raft guides with tourists on the river, and helicopter tours flying overhead. It is always amazing to me how so many people can afford to, and actually want to, do things like that when I am extremely happy simply biking or hiking around and seeing what exploring I can do on my own. I guess that is the difference between a lot of people. Some like to get shown things, while others are much happier figuring things out for themselves. I'm not sure I can say which would be a better quality overall, all I know is we need to have everyone working together with all different types of qualities if we ever want to see a change in how we do things. One person preaching may inspire a few people, but everyone solving problems together is really what gets things accomplished. We can all get along if we really try, and we can work on these climate issues we are having right now. Maybe in the future we will have different things to work out together, but as long as we all work together then they shouldn't be too hard.
