Adventure Cycling Association is accepting applications now through December 31, 2018, for the sixth annual Greg Siple Award for Young Adult Bicycle Travel. Four young adults will be selected to take an Adventure Cycling educational course, win bike travel gear, and more in exchange for doing an outreach project that promotes bicycle travel.

“Throughout my travels, it has been my experience that most people are good, that the human body is incredible, and that the earth is a thrilling place to live,” wrote one 2018 Greg Siple Award winner, Rachel Horn, in her application. “I am enthused to share this reality with the people around me as we travel on our bikes.”

The Greg Siple Award for Young Adult Bicycle Travel was developed for 18- to 30-year-olds in response to Adventure Cycling members’ overwhelming enthusiasm and commitment to inspire more young people to travel by bicycle. The award is named for Adventure Cycling cofounder Greg Siple, who discovered a love for bike travel in his youth.

Two types of awards will be offered based on experience level: Intro to Bike Travel and Outdoor Leadership. The Intro to Bike Travel award is for those who dream of going on a self-supported bicycle tour but aren’t quite ready to hit the road. Once outfitted with a new touring bicycle from REI equipped with Arkel panniers and camping gear from Big Agnes, the two winners will attend an Adventure Cycling Intro to Road Touring course with their bike shipments covered by BikeFlights.com and a $400 travel stipend.

The Outdoor Leadership award is for those who have bike travel experience and want to get more involved in outdoor leadership. The two winners will develop their leadership skills by attending Adventure Cycling’s Leadership Training Course and will receive a $400 travel stipend, bike shipment to and from the course, and a $100 Cyclosource gift certificate to refresh their gear. They will also have the opportunity to take an Adventure Cycling self-contained tour.
