Mikaela Bollag-Miller

Instructor

Mikaela (she/her) grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts, where time outdoors first sparked a lasting curiosity about landscapes, water, and the stories they hold. She studied Geology and Environmental Science at Tufts University, exploring a range of topics in climate, hydrology, earth systems, and sociology. Her studies carried her to eastern Tanzania to explore local perspectives on climate change and its global impacts. Since graduating, she has followed a passion for exploring new landscapes, pursuing work in research, teaching, and expeditionary education.

Mikaela is most at home where science meets movement, whether that’s navigating alpine terrain, analyzing groundwater systems, or teaching students in the field. Mikaela has taught geology in the Swiss Alps, led multi-week backcountry courses through the Rockies and desert canyons, and worked as a hydrogeologist in Colorado, translating field data to better understand local aquifer systems. Most recently she returned to school to complete her Master’s in Hydrogeology at the University Montana, where she has been investigating mountain groundwater systems and instructing labs in Earth Systems Science. Across these roles, she’s developed a love for technical outdoor skills, field science, and opportunities to knit the two together. Mikaela is passionate about making science and outdoor spaces more accessible and inclusive, and she values education as a tool for building both knowledge and community. Outside of work, you can find Mikaela cooking, gardening, reading, or playing outside!
