Sam Sharp

Instructor

Sam grew up in the hills of Ohio. Inspired by that home landscape, he earned a BA in Environmental Studies from Kent State University. His teaching background began with Outward Bound, leading canoe and backpacking expeditions in the Appalachian Mountains. While Sam loves the eastern forests, he is perpetually drawn to the arid west – its open spaces, alpine terrain, and complex environmental challenges. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing and Environment & Natural Resources from the University of Wyoming, where he taught writing courses and led trips into the Rockies. His graduate work centered on integrating multiple value systems in environmental decision-making and supporting Indigenous-led conservation.

A writer and educator, he works to connect people and places with humility, honesty, and humor. This following has led him to a variety of environmental work in a variety of communities, from rural Appalachia to the Antarctic Peninsula.

When he’s not in the woods or writing, he enjoys skiing, painting, playing in rivers, and rats. He teaches environmental studies at the University of Wyoming.
